     OVER £7,000 RAISED!

Parrs Wood has been supporting the Reuben's Retreat charity for the last 12 months, raising over £7,000 which helped them on the way to reaching their initial target of £1 million in 23 months. A major contributor to our fundraising is Bagnall and Morris who have made regular donations throughout the year.

Bagnall and Morris are responsible for Parrs Wood’s recycling and refuse collection and were selected last year as part of a campaign by the student C02 team to improve recycling in school.

In 12 months we have gone from limited recycling to 90%, and the team has received a National Award from the House of Commons for their work. Besides being beneficial for the environment, another benefit of recycling is that some of the materials, such as scrap metal, are of value and the school donates this revenue to charities such as Reuben’s Retreat.

Reuben’s Journey

Reuben was enjoying a family holiday in Devon; he was his usual happy self, having fun crabbing with his older brother Isaac. Reuben had been ill for 3 weeks on and off and despite several Doctors visits, nobody was unduly worried. But then Reuben had a fall and became pale and distressed, his worried parents took him to hospital and when Reuben failed to respond to some routine tests he was sent for a CT scan. The scan showed a large mass on his brain they suspected to be a tumour.
Reuben had suffered an ATRT which is Atypical terratoid rhabdoid tumour, it is a very rare and aggressive form of Cancerous tumour. Reuben fell asleep in his Mummy’s arms on Tuesday 21st August 2012.
Reuben’s Mummy and Daddy hoped that in the event of Reuben passing away his organs could be used to help another little child. Sadly due to the fact the tumour was cancerous this was not possible and added to the devastation his parents were already feeling. So then Reuben’s Mummy Nicola was sat chatting about some good coming out of this tragic situation and started to discuss the option of setting up a charity. Nicola finished the conversation by saying ‘We could call it Reuben’s Retreat’, and so the journey began.

A legacy in his name

Despite the devastating grief that comes when a quarter of your family is gone, his brave and inspirational parents have set up a charity in his name, they plan to have a retreat in the north west countryside for children with life limiting and life threatening illnesses, with a support and bereavement counselling centre for Mummy’s, Daddy’s and Siblings who have lost their precious children. A place where families can take in the rolling hills and countryside, a place of comfort, peace and tranquillity, a place where memories can be built.
